21 March 2018
In celebration of National Women’s Month from March 1-31, 2018, female staff or the “Juanas” in the Head Office attended the Gender and Development (GAD) Seminar which was conducted last 21 March 2018 at the 3rd Floor Seminar at the OFBank Head Office. It was a half-day orientation and seminar facilitated by the Human Resources Department. The seminar focused on awareness on breast cancer and gynecological disorders under the Magna Carta of Women.
The Magna Carta of Women or Republic Act No. 9710 is a comprehensive women’s human rights law that seeks to eliminate discrimination against women by recognizing, protecting, fulfilling and promoting the rights of Filipino women, especially those in marginalized sector. In particular, a section of the RA 9710 also spells out every woman's right to comprehensive health services and health information and education covering all stages of a woman's life cycle, and which addresses the major causes of women's mortality and morbidity, including access to among others, maternal care, responsible, ethical, legal, safe and effective methods of family planning, and encouraging healthy lifestyle activities to prevent diseases.
Dr. Sheelagh Venturanza, PHLPost medical officer served as the speaker of the seminar. She has defined and discussed the causes of breast cancer and common gynecological disorders in women e.g. in the ovaries, cervix, vagina and uterus. She likewise gave illustration of these different types of disorders and explained the causes and suggested possible preventive measures and/ or treatments. Dr. Venturanza was assisted by Nurse Vanessa de Leon who is also from PHLPost.
It is an interactive seminar coupled with an open forum discussion participated by female Head Office employees who were very attentive and interested in the discussion.
OFBank is planning to have more of these Gender and Development Seminars and targets more participants not only in the Head Office but also for the female employees in all the branches.
